AI Agents Are Running Manufacturing. Your ERP Needs to Know.
AI isn't just for generating marketing copy or analyzing big data anymore. It's building actual parts of your shop floor process. This directly challenges how we've always managed manufacturing execution with ERP.
UnionTech, for example, uses what they call "Process Agents" in their industrial 3D printing operations. These aren't just fancy scripts or automation workflows. These agents bridge customer demand directly with manufacturing execution. They take an order, interpret it, and then orchestrate production steps. This includes everything from material selection to dynamic scheduling.
Think about what this means for your Epicor Kinetic system. Your BOMs, routings, inventory levels, and production schedules are the foundation of your factory's truth. If an AI agent starts making decisions – even seemingly small ones like optimizing a batch or adjusting a production sequence – how does that flow back into Epicor?
These agents aren't just consuming data. They're making choices. They need specific access to your Epicor data to be effective: current material availability, machine loads, maintenance schedules, and capacity. They use that information to decide how to fulfill an order. They might generate new production orders or modify existing ones on the fly.
The critical part is the feedback loop. How do these AI-driven decisions and actions get written back into Epicor? You need accurate records of production, material consumption, quality results, and labor. If an agent completes a manufacturing step, your ERP must reflect it immediately. You can't have production happening in a black box outside of your system of record.
This isn't a problem for the distant future. It's happening now. We need to start planning specific integration points for these AI agents. They are another system your ERP needs to talk to, just like a PLC or a barcode scanner. We must define the data they consume from Epicor. We also must define the confirmed actions and results they push back. If we don't, Epicor stops being the single source of truth for your operation. That's a mess no one wants to clean up.
